Jam plan

CHARTS

For EASE (reading from the same charts/changes, and having a limited set of solid jam tunes). We are using these classic Jamey Aebersold books below. Tunes are written out (chords, melody line) in Concert C and also Bb and Eb versions.

If you are coming to the jam, download this (full or a section)

AND … either the C or Bb/Eb version of this

AND another small set of tunes (some duplicates) (NB working on Eb version for a couple of these)

Calling Tunes ..

Feel free to call a tune from those charts (one that you know, that you play). Then play the band into the tune playing the melody/head section. And take the first solo. Everyone will get to call a tune if they wish to or have one prepared.

Soloing

We will play each tune to a pre agreed format … person A starts the melody and maybe the first solo, person B takes second solo .. etc. Keep it simple and clear.

Some tunes we might agree a short intro, or how the drummer will count the tune in. Tempo will be pre agreed.

Some people might be happy just playing the melody … all good. Some might want to solo for16 bars only (short form chorus) or 32 bars … one or two solo choruses is often best to keep everyone in the jam. All good.

Longer forms like 32, 48, 64 bar tunes might be better with a single solo chorus.

Longer forms can be split and shared … person A does A section, person B does B section.

Listen first

NJC created a Youtube playlist including some great recordings of jam tunes charted above.
